Zigong's Ziliujing Old Street reopened Sept. 28 after a major renovation, reviving the city's connection to its salt heritage along the Fuxi River.

The ceremony opened with drumbeats, marking the rebirth of a street that served as the "golden wharf" for well salt transport during the Ming and Qing dynasties. Dense salt wells, wooden pipelines and bustling river trade once made Ziliujing Old Street a symbol of Zigong's prosperity as China's "Salt Capital."

The renovated district now houses more than 30 merchants, including 16 new brands that blend tradition and innovation. The first phase covers about 16,000 square meters and is already open.

The second phase will expand over 55,000 square meters with four themed zones: a cultural and creative park focused on lantern industries and art performances, a city park offering salt-transport-themed riverside leisure spaces, a commercial zone featuring experiential retail, and a scenic area with immersive salt culture tours.

The developments aim to reshape the street's cultural landscape and support Zigong's plan to promote urban growth through culture and tourism.

Reopening celebrations from Sept. 28 to Oct. 12 will feature a folk music festival on two stages and two exhibitions: "Salt in Everyday Life" and "Revival of Salt: A Legendary Glow." The events showcase Zigong's thousand-year salt culture.
