The VOLANT VE25-100, a ton-class manned electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft, has successfully completed its first round of crewed test flights at Zigong Aviation Industrial Park.
Conducted from Oct. 4 to 14, the tests marked China's first crewed flight of a ton-class eVTOL, underscoring Zigong's growing role in the emerging low-altitude aviation sector.
As China's first high-grade commercial passenger eVTOL designed under a combined framework of CCAR-23 and CCAR-27 special conditions, the VE25-100 had previously undergone extensive unmanned flight tests before the crewed trials. Those earlier tests included high-risk scenarios such as simulated flight control and motor failures.
The VE25-100 Skylar is designed for short-range regional air mobility, with applications including passenger transport, aerial sightseeing, cargo delivery, medical aid and emergency rescue.
Development has moved swiftly since VOLANT established its Intelligent eVTOL Manufacturing Base at the park in November 2023. The first Zigong-produced prototype rolled off the production line on May 23, 2025, reaching this flight milestone within months. At full capacity, the facility is projected to produce 300 aircraft annually with an output value exceeding 7.5 billion yuan ($1 billion).
Zigong's aviation park now hosts several major drone and general aviation projects, forming an integrated industrial ecosystem for the low-altitude economy.
