A vibrant celebration of traditional culture unfolded in Fushun county, Zigong city, on Feb. 11 as the opening ceremony of Sichuan's 2026 Spring Festival public cultural activities and the flagship event of the "Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) New Year Shopping Month" officially kicked off.

Jointly hosted by the Sichuan Provincial Department of Culture and Tourism and the Zigong Municipal Government, the event brought together 91 dragon and lion dance troupes from 20 cities and prefectures across the province.

Amid resounding drums and gongs, over 700 dragon and lion dancers took turns performing with vigor. Highlights included the nationally recognized ICH of Luzhou Yutan Colorful Dragon Dance, renowned for its fluid movements and the artistry of "unity between man and dragon." The fiery dragon dance from Huanglongxi in Chengdu dazzled with dynamic choreography, showcasing the rich heritage of ancient Shu culture.

Local troupes also impressed audiences with distinctive creativity. The Fushun auspicious dragon and awakening lion performance ingeniously incorporated elements of the city's famed tofu culture and its legacy as the "Land of Talented Scholars." The all-female dragon dance team from Pengshan district in Meishan performed with golden and silver dragons, highlighting the strength and elegance of female cultural inheritors. Performers from Aba, Guangyuan, Yibin, Liangshan and other regions added ethnic flair and regional features. Meanwhile, troupes from Bazhong, Dazhou, Mianyang, Leshan, Deyang, Guang'an, Ganzi, Nanchong, Neijiang, Suining, Yaan and Ziyang also presented wonderful performances.

Earlier in the day, a grand parade featuring more than 1,000 participants — including dragon and lion troupes from across Sichuan province and nine local folk groups from Zigong — set off from Hengchuan Experimental School and proceeded along a 2.5-kilometer route to the county's cultural and sports center. Along the way, colorful formations such as Zigong tie-dye, Fushun Hanfu, suona music from Tongsi and floral boat performances from Rong county interacted closely with onlookers, filling the streets with cheers, camera flashes and festive joy.

The parade adopted a combination of mobile performances and fixed-point showcases, with two designated display areas allowing audiences to experience folk culture up close and share in the exuberant spirit of welcoming the New Year.

In addition to the performances, an ICH-themed cultural and creative market was also held. As the core component of Sichuan's 2026 "ICH New Year Shopping Month," the market featured 50 representative ICH projects from all 21 cities and prefectures in the province, more than 300 ICH products, and over 100 local cultural, creative and agricultural specialty items from Fushun and other districts of Zigong. Visitors browsed exquisite crafts such as Daoming bamboo weaving, Mianzhu woodblock New Year prints, Beichuan Qiang embroidery and Fushun tofu-making techniques, while sampling regional delicacies including Miyi brown sugar, Dengying beef and Dongpo pickles.

Organizers also invited online influencers to promote the market through livestreaming. Complementary activities, including a Spring Festival fair and traditional customs experiences, allowed visitors to enjoy shopping, tasting, watching and participating while immersing themselves in the festive atmosphere.

Following the showcase, participating troupes will host additional performances in cities and rural areas across the province, according to organizers. During this year's Spring Festival period, Sichuan plans to host more than 2,000 cultural activities — ranging from ICH exhibitions and museum displays to public performances and cultural tourism promotions — inviting visitors from around the world to celebrate the New Year in the province.
